Raceform

Raceform, the official form book of racing, records extensive details of every major UK and foreign event in which a British trainer participated. These can be bought at any race and are considered essential reading by track veterans and those seeking to make a profit from horse racing. The following list details the things that can be found in Raceform.

Main features

The official going

This is shown at the head of each meet and is recorded as follows:

Turf: Hard; firm; good to firm; good to soft; soft; heavy.

All weather: Fast; standard; slow.

The weather is shown below the date.

The wind is given as a strength and direction at the winning post.

Visibility is always good unless otherwise stated.

The position of the starting stalls is listed against each race as either High (H), Centre(C) or Low (L)

Prize money shows values down to sixth place

Competitive Racing Classifications are listed on scale from class A to class G.

Weight for age allowances are given where applicable for mixed age races.

Race Numbers for foreign races will carry the suffix ‘a’.

In The Race Result, the figures to the left of each horse show the race number of its most recent listing in Raceform. The superscript figures indicate the horses finishing position in that race and are coded as follows:

  = winner
  = finishing positions second to fortieth
  = brought down
  = carried out
  = fell
  = pulled up
  = refused to race
  = ran out
  = slipped up
  = unseated rider
  = void race
  = withdrawn

The Adjusted Official Rating is the figure in bold type directly after the horses name in the race result.. this figure indicates the official BHB rating, at entry afer the following adjustments have been made:

(i) Overweight carried by rider
(ii) The number of pounds out of the handicap
(iii) Penalties incurred after the publication of weights

However, no adjustments have been made for

(i) Weight for age
(ii) Riders claims

The trainer is shown in brackets for every runner

The horse’s age is shown immediately before the weight carried

Weights shown are actual weights carried

Headgear is shown after actual weight carried and is expressed as on of the following:

V = visor
H = hood
E = eyeshield
C = eyecover

The Draw for starting places is shown after the name for each jockey

The Official Distances between the first six horses across the line are shown on the right hand side

Starting prices (SP) appear to the right of the finishing position in the race result

Raceform Ratings (RR) which record the level of performance given by each hors, appear to the right of the starting price

Speed Figures (SF) appear for every horse that clocks a sufficiently fast time, and are listed to the right of the Raceform Ratings

Stewards inquiry, apart from in special circumstances will be included only if it involves a race winner

Race times in the UK, (apart from official times which are electronically recorded and shown to within 100th of a second) are clocked by Raceforms own timekeepers

Staring Price Percentage is ranged below the final finisher and gives the total SP percentage of all runners that competed

Tote details appear at the end of the meet details to which they refer

The Owner of the winner is listed immediately below the Tote together with the breeder and details regarding any claimed horse
