Under-round –
A set of odds where the percentage equivalents add up
to less than 100, giving backs an arithmetical advantage
over the bookmaker.
Understaking – This occurs when
the total paid and receipted on a betting slip is not
enough to cover the bet or bets written.
Unfancied - A horse that is not expected
to win.
Unfavourable game – The mathematical
term for a bet where the player is arithmetically disadvantaged
by the terms of play (most games!)
Union Jack – A limited cover
multiple bet consisting of 8 trebles from 9 selections,
with the trebles being visualised in Union Jack or noughts
and crosses format.
Unnamed selections – Any selections
that are nominated by the racecard, trap number, favourite,
trainer, or jockey’s mount, as opposed to the
runner’s name.
Unusual betting pattern – Where
there is a disproportionate plunge on one particular
result, sometimes due to insider knowledge or conspiracy.
This can lead to betting being suspended.
Up-and-down – A ‘stakes-about’
bet.
