Horse Racing Glossary - S

Selling race - A race the winner of which is afterwards sold at auction.

Settler - Bookmakers employee who calculates bets.

Show – The odds a bookmaker is displaying for a certain bet at a certain time.

Show price – The current odds on offer at the course during the period before a race. Punters sometimes have the option of taking these odds rather than the starting price.

Showcase – The Tote showcase is the most competitive betting opportunity per day.

Silver ring - An enclosure cheaper than Tattersall's and usually sited adjacent to it.

Single – A bet that involves just one selection on one event.

Single-stakes-about – A bet that is made up of two singles, each with an ‘any-to-come’ single at the same stake on the other selection.

Skinner – Slang for an unbacked winner.

Sleeper – A winning betting slip that has gone unclaimed.

Slip – The written evidence of a bet that is required in order for a bet to be valid.

SP – Starting Price.

Speciality bet – A bet that comes on a specially printed slip, offered by one particular company, that often comes with bonuses and consolations.

Split – An alternative name for a Round Robin.

Spread a plate – When a horse has damaged or lost a racing plate before the start of a race.

Spring Double – A double bet on the winners of both the Lincoln Handicap and the Grand National.

Springer - A horse whose price shortens dramatically (e.g. from 20-1, 100 - 8, 10 - 1, 8 - 1, 6-1, 5 - 1, 9 - 2, 4 - 1 to an S.P. of 7 - 2).

Sprinter – Horses who specialise at racing at the shortest distance on the flat.

Stable's betting pattern - The method usually adopted by connections when placing the stable money.

Stakes about – A form of ‘any-to-come’ bet.

Staking plans – A form of betting strategy which involves moderation and management of the stake size.

Starters orders – The procedure that precedes the off of a race.

Starting price - The final price at the time the race starts.

Stayer – A horse who specialises at racing over the longest distance on the flat.

Steeplechasing - A form of National Hunt racing run over distances of two miles up to four and a half miles, where the horses jump fences of varying height, and consistency

Steward's enquiry - On any suspected infringements of the 'Rules of Racing' the Stewards hold an investigation

Sticks - Jumps (hurdles or fences) as opposed to the Rat.

Stop-at-a-winner – Instruction to a bookmaker to end a series of bets as soon as a winner is attained.

Straight-up – A win in handicap bet that comes without the aid of the handicap.

Stuffy horse – A horse that needs work to keep its breathing clear.

Super Heinz – A full cover multiple bet with 7 selections: 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 fourfolds, 21 fivefolds, 7 sixfolds, and one sevenfold, making a total of 120 win stakes, or 240 each way stakes.

Super Yankee - Full cover multiple bet covering 5 selections, also known as a Canadian.

Suspect form - Form which may not be as sound as it looks on paper.
