Racecourse official
– Course staff who are all licensed by the Jockey
club, including the Clerk of the Course, the Clerk of
the Scales, the Starter and the Stewards.
Racing calendar – The official
weekly publication which gives the full details of entries
in full for races, handicap weights and other official
information.
Racing plates – Lightweight
horseshoes that are specially designed for racing.
Rails - The dividing barrier between
Members' and Tattersall's where the big bookmaking firms
are represented. Also the white posts and rails which
mark out the racecourse on either side.
Rated stakes – A handicap where
the weights are all 14 lbs or less.
Ratings – A numerical assessment
of a horse’s ability.
Result – The outcome of a race.
Return – The sum you get back
from a winning bet, which includes the winnings plus
your original stake.
Reverse forecast – A bet where
you combine two permutations, (A and B) into two combination
bets (AB, BA). This bet requires two stakes but wins
if the two selections come home in any order.
RHT – Racecourse Holdings Trust,
a non-profit-making company whose aim is the preservation
of racecourses.
Rigged betting – Betting where
the odds have been artificially manipulated in order
to make an unfair gain.
Ring - The place where the bookmakers
trade from.
Ringer – A horse running illegally
in a race, often an older horse running in a race for
younger horses.
Roll-up – An accumulator bet.
Round Robin – A wager of 10
bets comprising of 3 selections (A,B,C) in 3 doubles,
one treble and each pair in single-stakes-about singles.
Round the Clock – A complex
any-to-come bet for 3 or more selections. Each selection
is staked as a single, followed by an any-to-come singles
on the other selections rotating.
Roundabout – A bet of 3 singles
on 3 selections (A,B,C) with ‘any to come’
doubles at twice the original stake on the other two.
Rounder – A bet of 3 singles
on 3 selections (A,B,C) with ‘any to come’
doubles at the same stake on the other two.
Ruin – A technical term referring
to the loss of a given capital set aside for gambling.
