Names – An owner
is forbidden from making use of an assumed name when
running a horse, in order to prevent people from disguising
the true identity of an owner.
National hunt – Courses which
either exclusively stage steeplechases and hurdling,
or which only stage flat races during the summer.
Nap - The main selection of the day
by a tipster.
No offers - A certain horse having
no quotation - the book-makers are not betting on it
for the moment.
Non-runner – A horse which does
not even make it to the starting blocks.
Non-starter – A horse which
is pulled out after entry but before the starter declares
them off.
Non-trier – A horse that does
not give of its best during a race.
Novice - Inexperienced Horse
Numbers board – A large metal
frame sited opposite the stand on a racecourse that
gives the names and numbers of each jockey taking part
in the race and various other bits of information. After
the race, the numbers of the winner and placed horses
are shown.
Nursery - A handicap race for two-year-olds.
