Maiden – A race
that is supposedly for colts, geldings or fillies, which
have never won a race, also known as novice hurdles
and novice chases. However, conditions sometimes permit
previous winners (e.g. maidens at closing, i.e. those
which have not won a race up to the time the entries
close), in which case penalties are allotted for later
wins.
Maiden handicap – A handicap
race that is exclusively for maidens that have run at
least four times in the UK.
Makes a noise – A horse with
respiratory trouble.
Mare - A female thoroughbred horse
of five years or older.
Market - A market is created, according
to demand, by the prices offered for each runner by
bookmakers at the course.
Mark your card - Make selections for
each race.
Match – A race between two horses
owned by two different owners, on terms they have privately
agreed.
Maximum payout – The absolute
top limit that an individual or firm of bookmakers will
pay out to a single customer on a single day. This limit
is not necessarily well publicised.
Monkey – A slang term for £500.
Morning glory – A horse that
shown stunning speed when galloping at home in the morning,
but which doesn’t reproduce it on the racecourse.
Multibet – A Tote facility that
allows punters to place a variety of multiple bets at
the racecourse.
Multiple bet – Any bet where
a given number of selections are covered by doubles,
trebles, fourfolds etc.
