Handicaps - Races in which horses
are allotted different weights to theoretically nullify
any disparity in their ability.
Handicapper - Professional responsible
for allotting the weights to be carried by each horse
in a handicap race.
Hanging – Movement by a tired
horse towards the rails or another horse, which should
be corrected by whipping.
Head lad – The second in command
at a racing stable, who has responsibility for organisation,
horse feeding and many aspects of running the yard.
Hedge - Pass on part or all of a wager
thereby reducing liability or, ideally, trading at such
favourable odds that a win must occur whatever the result.
Hobdayed – A horse which has
had an operation on the larynx.
Homebred – A horse that has
been bred at an owner’s stud farm, as opposed
to being bought at public auction.
Hunter-chases – Races that are
specifically for horses that have been used for hunting
that season.
Hurdles – Hurdles are jump races
over bars of wood that are at least 3ft 6 in height.
