Face – Someone that the bookmaker
believes to be in possession of useful knowledge about
a race.
Fair bet – One where over time,
the punter would likely end up even.
Favourite – The horse which
has the shortest price in the betting. If there is more
than one horse, they are known as joint favourites or
co favourites.
Field – The total number of
runners for a particular race.
Field book – A bookmaker’s
record of bets taken on a race, kept by the bookmaker’s
clerk.
Field money – The total amount
taken by a bookmaker on a given event.
Filly – A female thoroughbred
aged two, three or four.
First past the post – Where
bets are paid out according to the order of finish,
regardless of any subsequent amendments to the result,
following a stewards enquiry or some other happening.
First show – Opening set of
odds put up by the course bookmaker for an event.
Flat Racing - The Flat Season begins
at the end of March and runs through to the end of September
on turf. Races are run over a minimum distance of five
furlongs up to a maximum of twenty two furlongs.
Forecast - Nominating the winner and
the second place as well. A straight forecast = 1st
and 2nd in correct order. A dual forecast =1st and 2nd
in either order.
Form – A horse’s recent
achievements and record, taking into account many different
factors.
Fractional odds – The method
normally used to display odds, where both sites are
whole numbers. A bookmaker would use 15/8 rather than
1.875/1.
Frame – Device for displaying
the numbers of the first four horses to finish, which
gives rise to the phrase “in the phrame”,
meaning a placed hose.
Front runner – A horse who likes
to run at the front of the pack having got there early
on in the race. Some horse consistently ease off if
they reach the front of the pack, so need to be ‘covered
up’ until the last minute.
Full brother (full sister) –
Horses that have both parents in common. Half brothers
and half sisters are specifically horses who share the
same mother, but not horses who share the same father
by different mothers.
Full cover – Where a punter
has laid every possible combination of forecasts, tricasts,
doubles, trebles or accumulators from a given number
of selections.
Furlong - An eighth of a mile (220
yards)
