Daily Tote Double - The third and
fifth races on the card.

and sixth races on the card comprise this pool. Tickets
are 50p each.
Dark horse – A horse that looks
good but whose potential is unknown.
Dead heat - When two or more selections
cannot be separated by the judge or by the photo finish.
Declarations – Entries in a
race.
Distance - The distance of a race
– five furlongs is the minimum and the four and
a half miles of the Grand National is the longest. Distance
is also the margin by which a horse is beaten by the
horse directly in front.
Doll – Hurdles used to mark
the direction in National Hunt racing, normally only
used when part of the course is unusable.
Double - A multiple bet. In a win
double both horses must finish first for the double

Double result – Where a bookmaker
makes a concession to pay out twice if the result of

Down-The-Card - Indicates races at

Drifter – A horse whose price
lengthens noticeably in the betting before a race, usually
because the expected smart money on a horse fails to
materialise.
Dual Forecast - A Tote bet involving
the forecast of the first and second horses in a race
Dwelt – A horse that was slow
to get away when the stalls opened.
