in race after declaration stage.

of two or more selections, where the winnings plus the
stake from each successive selection is automatically
re-staked on the next.
Across the card – Bets on races
at the same time at different racecourses.
Action – The value of bets laid
out by a punter.
Age – All horses are given the
arbitrary birth date of 1 January, regardless of the
exact date of their foaling. This is to allow races
to be organised in age groups. Most flat races are for
2 year olds only, three year olds only, or three year
olds and upwards. Horses that have not reached their
first birthday are known as foals and those between
their first and second birthdays are known as yearlings.
Aged – A horse that has passed
its sixth birthday.
All out – A horse giving everything
it’s got.
All up to win – Where the place
stake of an each-way bet is laid on the winner in races
of fewer than five runners.
All ways – The full range of
bets required to obtain full cover in forecast and tricast
betting.
All weather – A synthetic race
surface.
Allowance - Weight relief of up to
7lb given to an inexperienced rider.
Also ran – A horse not among
the winners in a race.
Amateur rider – An unlicensed
jockey, who does not receive a fee for riding in a race.
Ante-post odds - Quotations given
prior to the day of a particular race. Bets so placed
are lost if your horse is a non-starter.
Any to come – An instruction
to reinvest all or part of a winning bet on another
bet.
Apprentice – A jockey in training.
Apprentice allowance – Weight
allowance afforded to apprentice jockeys aged between
16 and 24 to compensate for their inexperience, determined
by the number of winners they have ridden.
At the post - The point at which horses
gather before the start of a race.
Auction race – Races for 2 year
olds that have not yet won and which were previously
bought as yearlings at auction.
Autumn Double – A double bet
on the winners of both the Cambridgeshire Handicap and
the Cesarewitch, both run during October.
